Synopsis
Reynaldo Pedro Ferrer (Jamie Harris), a former activist involved in the independence movement for Puerto Rico, now lives as Ronald Peter. His father Popo (Jaime Tirelli) is a high-level operative in a clandestine faction of the movement, posing as a double agent in order to protect his family and preserve the group’s mission.

Still active in the movement is Pedro (Coati Mundi), a political prisoner who is willing to sacrifice his own life – and the lives of others – for the cause. Wanting to bring Reynaldo back into the fold, he assigns Cesar (Roger Guenveur Smith) to murder his son.

With flashbacks to the violent acts committed by the FALN (Fuerzas Armadas de Liberacion Nacional) in the 1970’s, I Believe in America frames one family’s personal journey within the larger historical struggle for Puerto Rican independence – and, in doing so, reminds us that politics, terrorism and even culture, are abstracts that can only be understood through the lives and struggles of the individuals they impact.
