Wearing custom masks, costumes and capes like the wrestlers who inspired them; these anonymous grassroots superheroes protect their metropolis against injustice. Super Animal challenges bullfighters to leave the bulls alone and fight him instead. After a savage beating kills his boyfriend, Super Gay becomes a champion of gay rights, fighting rampant homophobia. Ecologista Universal battles environmental destruction of every kind, all on foot. Super Barrio is the defender of poor tenants, helping them resist evictions by slumlords cashing in on gentrification. With a mixture of live action, comic book-style animation and a surf guitar soundtrack inspired equally by mariachi music and Batman, Super Amigos shows that with a little imagination, a good heart and the right mask, anyone can activate their communities to triumph over evil. Synopsis How does the Dominican Republic, a tiny island roughly the size of Connecticut, produce baseball superstars like Pedro Martinez, Vladimir Guerrero, Albert Pujols, Rafael Furcal and David Ortiz? Have you ever wondered what their journey was like on their way to the pros? What about the thousands who try but never make it? Rumbo a las Grandes Ligas is their story: an intimate portrayal of one of baseball’s most heralded breeding grounds, the Dominican Republic, and a close examination of their special brand of baseball. From the eyes of local kids playing stickball with bottle caps, to the perspective of several major league stars, this documentary shows a side of the game that few have ever seen: a much more personal side. This is a story that takes you through the poverty, pressures, and successes of people who dare to dream big. ADDITIONAL SCREENING: THURSDAY, JULY 26 HARD ROAD HOME

Synopsis Odds are that if you go to prison and are lucky enough to get out, you’ll be going back sometime soon. When Julio Medina was incarcerated, he was a drug-dealing gang leader who ought to have died countless times. When he was freed 12 years later, he was a changed man. Upon his release from prison, Julio committed himself to becoming a different kind of leader – helping people live, instead of making people die. He created Exodus Transitional Community, a program in Harlem dedicated to breaking the cycle of incarceration that ensnares so many people of color on the streets of New York. The trick to Exodus is that its staff knows firsthand what it’s like to go to jail. They’re all ex-cons – a badass group of do-gooders who are reaching their clients like no one could who hasn’t walked a mile in a prisoner’s shoes. Hard Road Home represents the extraordinary amount of energy, resources and strength of character required to improve the fate of just one person born poor on the American streets. Additional Screening: Wednesday, July 25 A WORKING MOM

Synopsis A Working Mom is the heartbreaking story of one mother’s extreme efforts to save her impoverished family – only to find she may have lost them in the process. In 1990, 22 year-old Marisa Villozial left her 3-year-old son and infant daughter in the care of her parents in Bolivia and traveled overseas to look for a job in the West. Landing in Israel, she spent 15 years doing grueling menial labor as a cleaning woman. Dutifully she sent back home her pay, believing she was building a house for her family and providing her children with a better life. She followed their growth through photographs and periodic telephone calls. But in 2005, when Marisa returned to Bolivia, she discovered that her money had been squandered, there was no new house, and, worse yet, she was a stranger to her own children. Her story is all too universal: one of poverty, globalization, and cultural alienation – both abroad and at home. ADDITIONAL SCREENING: Thursday, July 26 EL CLOWNPUERTO RICO: A REBIRTH IN CINEMA Over the course of the past two years, Puerto Rico has emerged as a powerful force in international cinema. By providing attractive tax incentives and a strong film commission, Puerto Rico has demonstrated its dedication to supporting quality filmmaking. It should come as no surprise, then, that there's a new wave of filmmakers from P.R. ready to show the world what it’s got. This year, we're proud to present three New York Premieres from La Isla de Boriquen: Puerto Rico.
